So i have just started to use Mac OSX and so far everything has been pretty easy to learn. I do want to ask though, how do i get finder to display thumbnail previews of videos. It seems to do this fine with mpg and mp4 files but not for avi files. is there any fix to this?

To view .avi files, you need perian. This is a quicktime plugin that is really useful. You can find it at perian.org
After you install this, the preview should be working.

well i tried installing perian and just looked at a movie file on hand which had a file type of mkv and it still didn't show the thumbnail. and quicktime just kept on loading the video and never played it whereas vlc played it instantly. but it seems that if i use vlc as my default player the thumbnails will not show up either.
