New Mac Pro won't recognize LaCie d2 DVD±RW

As stated above a I bought a Mac Pro and updated to 10.5.2. When I tried to connect my Lacie external DVD burner to it my computer doesn't seem to recognize it. All I see is "Unknown Device" under the Firewire section of the System Profiler. Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the Mac Pro to find the drive?

As a side note, I have been using this drive for a couple of years with a PowerMac G4 without any problems.

This is probably a stupid question, but did you insert a disc to see if it works?

I've got an external la cie DVD burner that I used with my Powerbook. I just got a Mac Mini and the Mini recognizes it just fine, even after upgrading to 10.5.2.

Actually the drive won't open when the computer is on. For a little while the drive would open with the computer off, but I think it stopped doing that after the last time I unplugged the power to the drive while the computer was off.

Do you have another computer that you can test it with? It might be dead.

its not dead, because as you said, it says that there is an "unknown driver"... hmm quick question... why do you need it? the macbook pro has one already and it is DVD+-RW/ DVD double layer...

try to see if LaCie have any type of drivers for it that maybe you need to install on mac...

I connected it back up to the G4 and it is working fine.

I don't need it, but I already had it and wanted it connected to the new computer. Sometimes it's nice having 2 drives, especially when installing software that is on 2 discs. I had already been to the Lacie site and the only update for the drive is for Panther (which is what my G4 is running) and wasn't required for Tiger, so I assume it isn't needed for Leopard.

To top things off it appears I didn't register the drive with Lacie and when I tried to do it online this weekend they want to know where I bought the drive and when. It has been too long and I don't have any paperwork on the order. So it will be mostly like Tuesday or Wednesday before I can call them as they are closed Monday.

I thought I would post an update on what is going on with the drive. I finally got around to calling LaCie. So far the problem appears to be that I have an old drive. There isn't anything wrong with the drive, but LaCie's fireware update app doesn't want to update it to any version above 1.09 and the current fireware version is 1.20.

I sent this information to LaCie on March 10th (and again yesterday March 13), but so far haven't received a response.

Just to update this in case someone else has the same problem.

I was finally able to get a response from LaCie about my problem. The determination was that my DVD burner is just too old to be compatible with my MacPro. I bought the drive before 2005, which is when LaCie updated their drive to be LightScribe compatible, therefore my drive can't update to the newest firmware.
