This just makes zero sense at all. I have an m2 ultra and was ready to upgrade to an m4 this year for AI image generation and a much faster gpu- but going to an m3 ultra makes absolutely no sense. Wtf Apple? They must be withholding the m4 ultra for the mac pro to then shove it down our throats with an extra 2000$ premium price tag later this year. Yuck!

Well now I'm confused...M3 ultra makes no sense. I'm coming from an M1 ultra and am not sure what chip to get now

I've decided to upgrade my M1 Ultra to the M4 Max.

The M4 Max has multi-core score that is quite a lot higher than the M1 Ultra, and it's single-core score is higher than the M3 Ultra.

In reality, my M1 Ultra already has enough processing power for everything I throw at it, my main reason to upgrade at this point is that it isn't able to drive my Dell monitor at 120Hz.

I've got an M4 Max MBP with the same chip in it, and it's a rocket ship. So I have to be really honest about my own needs (general computing, music production, video editing, all as hobbies)... the M3 Ultra just doesn't make sense. If I needed that high core count or massive amounts of RAM, it would. Otherwise all those clock cycles are going to sit there on my desk.

Damn. Before I was certain I’d buy the M4 Ultra, now I have no idea what to do.

Limp along on Intel and hope nothing drops compatibility for another year?
Buy the max and plan to replace it sooner?

I just put my m2ultra 128GB/2TB on the 2nd hand market for 4500EU (bidding starting at 3900) :)
Going for the M4Max 48/2TB, will be free then to upgrade. Dont need the 128GB anymore

Single 50% more , multicore 10% more. Brand new system with the M4 Max option. Got the M2ultra on release and still have applecare tilll june 2026, I always do this when a new model pops up.

This is not an add, coz I will only sell local on pickup. But just to show my way of thinking for upgrading.

The M3Ultra still has a faster GPU and on the AI front, it’s the first chip to include an NPU with more than 16 Cores.
And given Apple’s comments it’s looking possible that the next Ultra chip *probably* won’t be an M4 and it *probably* won’t arrive until 2026.
And despite the marketing name being “M3”, it has improvements not found in any of the other M3 family, like Thunderbolt 5 and the ability to have half a terabyte of RAM.

Not quite correct. All of the Ultra's have had 32 NPU cores. They don't seem to be well utilized though. From what I remember unlike most of the Ultra chip (CPU/GPU cores) the 32 NPUs need to be specifically targeted. One thing that is kind of odd with this release is that with boost on those cores that the M4 series got the M4 Max 16 core NPU should be basically the same speed as the 32 core on the Ultra unless Apple has updated those too.

How much higher is the M4 Max single core score vs the M3 ultra single core? Do we have reliable benchmarks yet?

I don’t think there’s anything for the M3 ultra and it’s definitely possible it’s clocked higher or something.

Ugh.. now I wish I just waited a little longer, I thought they'd wait until WWDC.

I bought the mini M4 Pro 12/16 48GB for $1,749 in November. It's a great machine but for $150 more I could get the much more substantial Mac Studio. I would probably be been fine downgrading to 36GB on the base M4 Studio for $1,911 (with tax + edu discount).

If I keep the mini until MA sales tax free day in August and buy the Studio then, it would only be $1,799 (edu).. only $50 more than the mini. 😂

I'm not sure where the best place to sell the mini would be to get the most money for it and avoid scams. (I sell small items on eBay but I'd be wary about selling an expensive computer there)

I've had good luck with itsworthmore.com and I typically get much higher offers than other places.

I checked them today and they quoted $1,235 which isn't too bad. I could possibly get $1,400 on eBay but after they take their fees I would net around what itsworthmore would pay AND I'd have to risk getting scammed.

You can squeeze a little more out using this url to apply a 5% bonus (up to $25 per device): https://www.itsworthmore.com/coupon/468XOR38/. Yeah that is usually my calculation when deciding if i'm going to eBay it or send it to them.
