New Mac user- what are the best applications/features to download?

Hello everyone,
I bought a macbook pro about a month and a half ago and have been way too busy to do anything nice with it- what applications are amazing overall for management of your macbook pro- keeping it in top shape and looking spiffy.
I dont know whats avaliable so its hard for me to specify what Im looking for.
I'd appreciate any help
