We have a Cisco AP at college and I had problems with my older macbook. The connection kept dropping and connecting back again every few seconds. So anyway it was time to buy the new macbook multitouch which i bought oct 21st the day after it came out. I went back to school and I had the same problem. The older macbook had atheros and the new one has broadcom.
Anyway I heard from the librarian that last year the PC's were having connection issues and this year it's the macs.
During that time I managed to get in touch with the sys admin via email and he asked me some information like my mac address. Nothing was resolved for a week. By then I bought the new mac and figured I'd give it a try. And I had the same problem. I got a bit ticked and managed to find the IT department. I spoke with the guy and he looked through the settings. I explained it was brand new and that my older mac had the same issue. Anyway he asked if I had a firewall and I said no. Then he made a comment about Safari. He said Internet Explorer was better. Which I let it go.
We walked to the library and I put my mac in front of the Access Point and he tried to force the connection by clicking on Network Settings. It did not work and it started dropping off and on like always.
He said that Cisco had told him that the only problem they could think of is that the macs may have been out of range. Which is not the problem because I was standing in front of the Access Point. He said he was starting not to believe them.
So now I'm starting to wonder whether I should return the mac back to the store I'm still under the 14 days coverage. I love the interface of the mac but I don't know if I can stick with a something that is not reliable as far as internet connection is concerned.
I really don't want to mess with bootcamp. I bought a mac and was planning to stick with that.
Has anyone had any issues with Cisco Access Points? I've searched around the web but there's unreliable information. Some people claim to not have any problems while others do. Also some say that IT departments don't care about apple users as much as PC users because PC is the majority. I also read to shut down IPv6 which I tried and there was a blog I found that talked about the PR RAM but I don't think it applies to me.
I was really trying to avoid going the Windows 7 route but I'm not sure right now. I found a really neat software called Scrivener and I was planning to do my 6 research projects in it for November. Unless I start hauling a netbook for internet connection but that's a bit excessive and the money could be better spent on the $260 for apple care.
