New MacBook Pro Models Feature HDMI 2.1 Port Instead of HDMI 2.0

Apple's just-announced 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models now come with HDMI 2.1 support, a significant upgrade on the models they replace.

Previously on the 2021 MacBook Pro models, the HDMI 2.0 port only supports a single 4K display with a refresh rate of up to 60Hz.

But the more advanced HDMI port on the new MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips means they now provide support for 8K displays up to 60Hz and 4K displays up to 240Hz.

The new MacBook Pro models also feature Wi-Fi 6E for faster wireless connectivity, along with three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an SDXC card slot, and MagSafe 3 charging.

Customers can order the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro via Apple's online store starting today, with availability beginning Tuesday, January 24. Pricing starts at $1,999 for the 14-inch MacBook Pro and at $2,499 for the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Finally the first couple of Macs to have HDML 2.1! Not that I use one but I'm curious if any users who use a 4k 120 hz TV like a LG C2 would be tempted to upgrade so they can get the full experience.

It's a huge upgrade over my current MBP.

Because not the m1 nor the M1 Pro could do it , for some reason

I got a 42" LG C2 during black friday. I will be upgrading to a M2 Pro Mini. But I'm coming from a 2018 i7 Mini.

120hz is nice to have for overall UI smoothness and viewing 24fps content.

Right, HDMI 2.1 with 4x 12Gbps FRL lanes can reach up to 48Gbps. With DSC 4K@240Hz requires about 43Gbps (the same as 8K@60Hz).

I wanna know if the MacBooks would be promotion or static 120hz on lg OLEDs I have the CX, does the macOS even let you use 120hz now with a tv using HDMI 2.1

That's awesome to hear! It looks like waiting for the M2 Pro Mini was worth it (instead of say buying a discounted Mac on Black Friday) and the correct decision so you can get that 120 hz experience.

Hopefully this makes third party USB-C to HDMI 2.1 adapters work with 4K@120Hz with existing Macs. The problem is these were also limited to 60Hz without any real reason so far.
