Just got my first Mac 3 weeks ago and I am loving it. I just opened a program called transmission a while ago and it immediately popped up a notice that an update was available and it installed it quickly and seamlessly. Do most apps on macs do this? I think it is just another awesome unexpected feature. It seams as if everyday I find more and more of these...

Yes, most programs show you when there are updates available.
 
Congrats!

By the way, you don't really have to shut down a Mac. Just put it to sleep (close the lid).

Also, going to different location with a sleeping laptop won't require restart to connect to the new network.

And many other benefits of OS X. =)
