New MacBook Pro won't backup iPhone

I have a new MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.4 and iPhone 3G

My iPhone connects and is recognized in iTunes, but I cannot backup or do anything with the Apps or Music. The photos transferred to iPhoto.

Any suggestions?
