Hey everyone, Im considering selling my early 08 MBP and picking up a Unibody Macbook. I wanted to know what anyone who had made this switch thought of it.

-Are you happy you did?
-Pros and cons that you have come across?
-Anything else you feel like sharing about it!

Thank you all for your input!

No... don't do it:
- losing express card slot
- losing FW800 and 400
- gorgeous screen compared to MB
- discrete video card versus integrated on MB

Seriously, if you are looking for any performance change, it will not be mind blowing just because it is newer.

The only upside is that hard drive upgrade is easier.

How much are you selling the MBP for?

Well...
-I have never used the express card slot
-I do have a fw400 hd that I rarely use, but it is usb also
-The screen is my biggest concern. I can see the difference in the store, but honestly it doesnt kill me
-The video card I just dont use anything that needs it.

Basically I miss my ibook 12" and want something smaller. I dont have enough posts for the marketplace so I cant really discuss selling it, feel free to PM me if you want.

my girlfriend has a mid 07 Alu' MBP 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and i have a late 08 UMB in my sig.

while i do have more RAM than her (2GB vs 4GB) i wouldn't trade for her computer any day.

hate me if you must but hers makes a bunch of processing racket and IMO has a screen of less 'luster'. maybe it's just i love my glossy glass display.

but i'd keep my UMB with multitouch large style trackpad, DDR3 RAM, glass display, and smaller size ANY DAY.

the screen difference is the glossy v the matte. it can be a deal breaker for some. but if you said that you didnt notice it then go for it.

you said that you missed you 12" iBook, then you should also look at the regular macbook.

Or something smaller, more durable, better constructed, easier to upgrade hd, and lacking a possible faulty graphics chip. Thanks though.

I actually find myself to be more trendy with my late '07 MBP :p

The industrial-style chassis and the nice brushed aluminum feel and those speaker grills make me happy. I'm shivering just thinking of my lappy :D

Well I went the opposite direction. I got rid of my UMB for a MBP 4.1. It sounds like you really want the MBP -> UMB change so just go with it. But my issues with the UMB was the LCD is of much inferior quality. So much so that I could not stand using it.

I was in the same dilemma as you. Choosing an older model that has a non-reflective screen, has firewire 400, and possibly better battery life were things that were making my decision difficult. The only thing that kept me from choosing the older model was the faulty graphics card and less of a sturdy design. I went with the latter and i'm currently waiting for my unibody macbook pro.

Uni-Body Notebook

I sold my Mar 08 17" MBP for the new uMBP and at first I was a little nervous but now after having the new one for over a month I'm glad I did. The uni is much sturdier of a build and the keyboard is better for me.
I no longer have to worry about the graphic issues on the older model also.

Sorry for the late post I just saw the thread and thought I would kick in since I was in the same boat as you.

Haha late post is ok, as long as your telling me I made the right call.

same

I was in the same boat, and no question got the older MBP.
1. Needed Matte screen, couldn't stand the glossy.
2. Price, got my Sept 08 build date MBP 2.53 for 1400$, put in 20$ 4GB ram chips. Up to speed.
3. Didn't want a v1.0 chassis, the unibody seems to be a pretty darn good 1.0 version though.
4. Didn't want to PAY for just form factor. The UMBP didn't really have any performance enhancements, I'll wait for the next generation chipset or feature set.
