new macbook, want to sync iphone contacts/calendar

I got a new macbook (old one is destroyed) and need to sync my iphone 3GS for the first time. i got my music and apps synced, but i wasn't sure if i need to somehow transfer my contacts and calendars onto the macbook from the iphone before i sync it so they won't be erased? i do not have anything backed up (dumb i know) so i need to make sure i can sync the contacts/calendars before i do the sync. please help!!
