After 2,5 years of usage I'm still in love with my MacBook 12". It's been my only device for work and private stuff for all this time. I travel a lot, see a lot of airports, so the portability has been a huge advantage in many situations.
I use it daily with Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint, Safari, Photoshop, WhatsApp, Spotify, Citrix remote desktops and web apps and I never have the feeling the device is slow (my wife has the 2017 spec'ed out 15" MacBook Pro, so I know what a fast device should feel like).
The battery is also still amazing. I get through my workday of 9 to 10 hours with in many cases still above 10% battery left. This is without ever closing the lid, but with me being away from my desk for a meeting or two.
And I still get annoyed when I hear other MacBooks and Surfaces spin their fan loudly... I'm so glad to not have a fan, you get used to that so quickly.

And even though I really love my MacBook, the bezels look really dated in comparison to colleagues with Dell XPS's. How great would the MacBook be with comparably thin bezels....

In my opinion, Apple could just leave everything the same and just make the screen larger. When keeping the aspect ratio of 16:10 the same as on every MacBook (Pro), it would easily fit a screen much larger than 12.5".

If they would go the MacBook Air route, keeping a top bezel, a square 12.55" would fit easily. If they would go the rounded corners route and minimise the bezels completely, it would approach 12.7".

Or should Apple go the iPad Pro route and go for a 12.9" 4:3 screen? Or maybe the other direction and make the laptop smaller and keep the 12" screen? What do you prefer?

My preference is clearly the 12.7" version :)

Your 12.7" doesn't leave any room for a FaceTime camera. No support for Face ID either, which I'd like to have in my next MacBook.

Interestingly, the iPad Pro 12.9" is the same width (11.04") as the MacBook 12". However, the iPad Pro is also quite tall with its 4:3 aspect ratio, which could be a negative for some people.

I made some comments with regard to this, in this thread:

i think the middle road is the best, from design and functionality point of view, i love to have a thicker top bezel than the side ones and also to have facetime/faceID there
Or go with yoga S940 or zenbook s13 route to have a little notch
[doublepost=1555018966][/doublepost]i think the next one should have
-same physical dimensions but with 12.4"
-battery from 41.4-watt to 48 watt
-bt 4.2 to bt 5.0
-the newest 5w cpu
-second usbC instead of the headphone jack

Just realised that where the notch is, on a desktop we usually have a blank status bar. OP should do a render with that as well.

Why the hate for rounded displays?

Form over function. As an XS Max, iPP 11“ owner i think they have no benefits (besides nice design). Apps need no be optimized or work around it. Especially weird when working fullscreen with pictures and documents. It also looks strange when you interact with Remote Desktop Apps etc., which require a standard layout. Really not a fan. Please keep MacOS closer to the Windows/Linux world in this regard.

I agree that it is predominantly form, but in my opinion it does not affect function. At least much less than other Apple's mishaps lately.

The degree of annoyance is subjective, but as long as the rest of the world doesn’t switch to a rounded format it creates more problems than it adds extra value. Those extra pixels do nothing useful on a bigger screen. On my iPad I have either black bars or have too zoom in and move the content to see the corners. Which is why no competitor is copying this for tablets.

Given the criticism the Facetime camera of the MB has received, perhaps not having it in the first place would be a good thing?

;-)
Jest or no, I honestly wouldn't miss it if it allowed a sleek near-bezelless design. Prefer FaceTime on iPhone, and hey, they've made just about everything else a dongle add-on :p maybe we could get a decent 1080p cam if it was a separate purchase too.
