If I just want to have my new machine exactly as my last one, what is the best way?

I am thinking a Cat6 cable to connect the two and use Migration Assistant on the new machine. If this is the best, does the old machine need to be in Target mode?

Connect Macs with ethernet cable and use migration assistant. Everything will be the same.

I'm a Mac neophyte, so I don't know for sure, but most ethernet cards are auto-switching at this point. The need for crossover cables has mostly disappeared.
