I did not expect the super drive is so noisy when boot up. It spins and spins, trying to read from the empty slot. I have a Macbook SR (2007), and it's much quiet.

Anybody has similar issue?

I noticed the same thing on the previous gen. umbp.. At first I thought it was either on crack or just broken, but unfortunately its neither.. Id be happy if it didnt exist at all. +1 for externals..

I can live with that. One improvement over my 2007 MacBook is when wake up from sleep, the super driver does not spin up.

Basically there are 2 models of superdrives.

one is the Hitachi-LG model and the other is the Matsushita (sp?)/Panasonic model.

the panasonic model in my experience has always been the louder drive during the drive's initialization on boot up. the HT-LG is quiet. its really 50/50 on what drive you get. This is coming from someone who has had the LG first, then replaced with a Panasonic. The Panasonic on my first MBP was also louder.
