I'm trying to help a friend (socially distanced) with her printing issues.

Earlier this year, she bought the base version of the new MBP 16", the one with the better speakers. (I can get more detailed info if needed.)

At first, she could print to her HP 1320 laser printer.

There was the issue with the expired certificates for the printer driver. So, she uninstalled the printer driver, then went to the HP website to get a new printer driver.

Lo and behold, there's no printer driver. HP apparently no longer supports the printer.

The Apple website sends her to the HP site.

She tried restoring the driver from her backup. Good news: she backed up her HD the day before she uninstalled the printer driver. However, she couldn't figure out how to restore the driver from the backup.

Any recommendations?

I had this issue and for me IIRC I installed just using generic drivers where it installed as a "Generic PCL Laser Printer". I still had duplexing capability. However, this was for a basic BW laser printer using wired USB...if she has a MFC or wireless, that might not be an acceptable solution.

This may help as well if the system is a wireless one.

Tell her to completely remove the printer and then install it again. Apple has since restored the HP certificate and issued updated HP printer drivers that should work for her once again. The HP drivers can be downloaded thru System Preferences, Software Update.

Also, the suggestion by @bill-p is a good one. I'm currently using the Gutenprint driver for my HP Laserjet 1012 which likewise was affected by the expired certificate.

Thank you for the replies.

She ended up frustrated enough that she bought a new printer--but not an HP. LOL.

Now she's going to give me the 1320, which has more features than my current printer.

Re everyone's suggestions:

She tried Software Update--nothing. She tried the HP website: drivers not available. She tried the Apple website--it referred her back to the HP website.

I forwarded the recommendation of Gutenprint and generic drivers. But by then she was already shopping for a new printer.

Thanks again.
