New MBP Battery Indicator

I just got a new mbp and this is my first. I was just wondering how the battery indicator should work? Mine just stays on for a brief moment (2 sec.) when I first plugged and unplugged the magsafe cable then it will go off and remain off. Is that the way it's supposed to be?

If it should work that way, I don't really see the real use of it.

There is a button next to it you can press to make it light up.

Isn't there a button to the left of the indicators you can press for the battery's current status?

silly me.....YEP!!!, there's a tiny button that does the work...
