new MBP complete battery rundown, won't sleep

i tried going through the steps to calibrate the battery. I let the battery run all the way down. When I do so the machine writes the memory contents to HD then completely shuts off, does not try to sleep. Is this normal? I've used previous gen MBPs that will actually go to sleep and preserve RAM contents as long as possible when the battery runs all the way down.
