New MBP....afting futzing around with it for 3 days, it turns out SMART is reporting bad HD. It was a gift, no receipt.

Less than 7 days old though.
Can I bring it in and swap it with a totally different model (prefer hi res 15") instead of the i7 13" MBP

you can swap it but only hi-res in stock with be top of the line model.

Yeah, it's possible you'd need to return it and order the model you want online, if it's not one they stock in the store, but you shouldn't have any trouble either way.

Is it one of the new models that just came out or older? If so and you have no receipt or means of getting one you may have issues proving how old it is. You should really get a copy of the receipt. Did you register it with Apple already?

I just noticed the "no receipt" bit in the original post. No, without a receipt you won't be able to return it/swap it. You will be able to get it repaired though. Maybe you should check with whoever bought it for you and get a copy of the receipt if you want to exchange it?
