I just got a new Penryn MBP to replace my old one, and was wondering how to move my time machine drive to the new machine? Can I simply plug it in and it automatically knows what to do with it? Or will I have to start over from scratch with time machine?

Thanks

I've moved my Time Machine backups to new, larger drives, but never to a new Mac. I think it might be possible if you named your new MacBook Pro the same as the old one. That might "trick" Leopard & Time Machine into thinking you are using the same Mac.

are all your files the same as the old MBP? if so, it should just be plug-n-play.

I tried to move mine over when I got my MBP, but it couldn't get it to work. I was coming from an iBook so that could have had something to do with it. I ended up just starting a new backup. All of the backups from my iBook stayed in the backups folder, but a new one was made for my MBP. So you don't have to erase the hdd.
