Hey, I am trying to test out the battery life

2017 15" MBP, new

Based on my first test I got around 5 hrs and 40 minutes on battery. This was taking into account a 1 hr sleep period where I left the computer on desk and went for lunch.

Aside: the battery continues to drain while in sleep mode? What about power off? (I noticed a 2% reduction after turning on the MacBook after 2 days shut off)

Googled and implemented some tips, e.g., reduce screen brightness, disable a bunch of settings, etc. Nothing major.

Going to do a second test.

Question: I followed some advice from here http://osxdaily.com/2016/11/30/macos-sierra-battery-life-drain-tips/ and noticed CPU processes like mds_stores, etc., indicating that indexing is still going on.

So, I imagine I have to wait until these system processes complete on their own before I can get an accurate measure of the battery life under normal conditions? Is that correct, even though the processes mentioned were not, at the time, using any CPU resources?

Yes.

Give it a few days/week to complete these tasks. Test it with a stopwatch, don't look at the battery estimates. Also I would suggest you just use it and enjoy it, only test these things unless A: you have a lot of time, or B: you notice a lower than expected battery life.

I turned off spotlight (indexing) for mail. I have thousands of emails. It would cause weird problems like Mail app crashing when sending mail and those mds processes eating up cpu randomly for long periods, even though it should have finished indexing all emails days ago.
