New MBP owner and very happy but question about priming battery?

I just got a new MBP last night and I love it so far. It's quite the jump from my core duo mac mini 1.6.

So I got home and started using the laptop NOT plugged in. The battery is drained and the computer shut off. was this the correct way to "prime" the battery? Do I just charge it full and keep draining it till the next charge.

Thanks in advance

It doesn't really matter what you do at first, but over time, you should avoid too many deep cycles. Lithium-ion batteries are not like NiMH, which like to be fully discharged and then fully recharged every time.

Lithium-ion batteries prefer to be constantly kept around 40%. Unfortunately, that's impossible with current OSes, which insist on charging the battery to 100% no matter what. But you can still prolong the life of your battery by only going below 30% or 40% when you really need to, and by staying plugged in when it's convenient.

About once every couple months, though, you should do a deep cycle to keep the battery calibrated.
