Hi,
I just picked up a new 2014 MBP (256gb flash). I want to restore the backup from my previous 2011 MBP but it's about 500gb..

Is it possible to restore a time machine backup but have everything put on a 1tb usb 3.0 hard drive?

I think you would have to copy files manually to your 1Tb hard drive! It really isn't that hard, just open the folder and go to the latest back up and you will see all your files there, copy everything or individual file/folder and paste in new drive!
