I am considering a new MP with either the 2x2.26 or the 2x2.66 xeon quads. What, if any, performance issues should I consider or expect to see with the 2.26s vs the 2.66s? Photoshop, 3d graphics, rendering, etc.

ps the machine comes with the GT120 and I am considering upgrading to the 4870.... and increasing the ram from 6 to 12.

The 2.66 is 17% faster than the smaller processor.
If you can justify $1000 for 17%, go for it!

The 4870 is a must for 3D work and the 12GB upgrade for $300 is definitely worth it. 6GB is a little less these days.

I thought it was more like 11% (cinebench and geekbench) for $1400 (Apple online store)...

BTW, I'm going through this same decision now... I bought a 2 x 2.26 about a week ago and am looking to exchange it for a 2 x 2.66 (or unrealistically, a 2 x 2.97).

As far as the upgrades, I'd suggest only doing it if it doesn't affect your CPU decision, since that can never be "officially" upgraded.

Given the OP's software requirements, the 4870 and additional RAM will be needed.

As per a CPU comparision, take a look at this:

Given the cost of the '09's, the best choice IMO, would actually be the 3.2GHz '08 Octad available in the refurbished store. It's very similar to the 2.66GHz '09 Octad, but for less money. RAM and graphics card upgrades are needed anyway from either model's base configuration.
