I noticed the new 160gb Classic supports volume/down controls with inline Apple earphones. Is there a new firmware for the old Classic to support that?

Nope. I don't even remember when the first-gen Classic had an update. I have one, and love it apart from a glitch where music pauses suddenly and the starts back, and gapless isn't working very well on it.
They don't give old iPods new features. Not normally anyway. 
Its all expected though of course, otherwise there'd be no reason to upgrade apart from new form factor.
