New Penryn Mbp Crashes Everytime!!!

Hi Everyone,

I'm really disappointed, I just spent 3,200.00 dlls in a New MBP, (my first MAC ever) and just last night when I was listening to music, organizing it and getting some music on my iPhone it crashed, and it wont let me do the "Force Quit" thing, I have to press the power button for 3 seconds to shut it off.

At first I tought that working in Illustrator was the problem, but it happens everytime no matter what programs I'm running, it has happened almost everytime I've worked for an hour or so. Does anyone have the same problem I have?

I would bring it back to a local Apple Store to have replaced or call Apple Support to have them square you away. You shouldn't be spending time with this. It should be under factory warranty still.
 
It may be a hardware problem, but it also may be the OS software.

Unplug all USB and Firewire peripherals other than mouse and keyboard.

Your first step always should be to boot from the OSX DVD (put in the DVD, start the machine, hold down the C key until the installer comes on screen.)

Go into the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility, and do a Repair Disk on your hard drive. This will tell you if there are data structure problems on the hard drive, and will repair some types of problems. If you get errors reported and repaired, run it again until you get no errors. If it says it is not repairable, or if the SMART status gives a warning, then assume a hard drive problem and take it in.

Restart the machine from the hard drive, and go into Disk Utility in the Applications; Utilities folder. This time, do a Repair Permissions. There are normally a couple of things to repair. If you get a long list, do it again and see if it does the repair with minimal or no errors.

Now test the function of your machine. Does it still crash? If it does, is it on specific programs, or randomly in any program?

If the machine crashes, but is usable in the finder, back up your data to DVDs or to an external hard drive

If it is randomly, or during Finder operations rather than in one specific application, consider doing an Archive and Install from the OSX DVD to pleace a new OS on the drive without erasing your User information or data.

Doing the above won't fix a hardware issue, but it will eliminate some variables, so that the real problem can be concentrated on.

Crashing after an hour could be a heat related thing. Make sure you are using the machine on a hard surface (NOT on blankets or pillows, for example) and that the cooling vents are not obstructed.

Try to do a verify disk permission and then a repair disk permission in Disk Utility if you can get into the OS, if you can't boot up into the OS X install disk and select disk utility under tools on the menu bar.
