It says graphics cards up to 16 MB. Does this mean our Ye Olde Rage cards will actually play it?

Yeah. My brain didn’t function correctly when I typed that LOL. Sorry for the mixup. Our Ye Olde Rage cards from the later iMacs might/should be able to handle them.
So this is kinda related but also not.
I can play Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy on Rage128 Macs.
The OG system requirements do support the Rage 128; but also requires 32MB VRAM.

I've ran both games successfully at the lowest settings on 640x480 on 8MB Rage128 Pro machines at 500MHz. An iBook G3 and iMac G3 respectively. These are far below the 32MB requirement. I find this relevant because I never been able to get the games to run on similarly spec'd PCs. I always used to try to play them on my IBM ThinkPad A22m. A much faster 800MHz Pentium III, and a Rage128 Pro (though I don't remember the framebuffer size, but I can assume it is at least 8MB). The games fail to even launch on Windows with a Rage128 chip. I tried on various OSes from Windows 98 to 2003 and it never worked. I was surprised when I figured out they ran on the G3s.
I think I was even able to run the game on my Pismo which IIRC has even less VRAM.

I'd bet this game would probably run on less than 16MB but probably not too well.

Hey guys I guess this post would explain why I had a lot of traffic from this site on my itch.io page. Also thanks for posting.

I stated on the garden that I wanted to design a game aimed specifically at PPC macs due to the fact I grew up with them and 68k! I still have G4 and and mid 09 macbook. Both of which has assisted in the creation of this game. The macbook is actually running the unity engine for it. As I also stated in an early post elsewhere I'm not a software designer nor do I have any IT qualifications. So Skyrim it definitely is not. I will endeavour to make it the best I possibly can. I love fantasy RPGs. So there's the motives.

As for video cards I havn't had a confirmation yet that it will run on a 16mb card. My unity engine tells me it should run on that. 32 or 64 would be ideal. I've designed it to be as light weight as possible. To make it as accessible as possible to vintage mac and PC users. It's also universal binary too I'll add.

That hardware demo I've uploaded should be a rough guide as to how your machine can handle it. I've added at lot since that demo! It currently has basic attack animations/scripts. And there's basic 2d npcs and some 3d enemies. So the requirements will creep up slightly but not too much. I also had to turn the texture quality up on the fastest setting as the dialogue became unreadable.

So if you have a 16 mb card or any PPC or older intel machine feel free to give it a try. Highest intel os I've tried is 10.8.5 so I'm not sure if it goes all the way to Mojave or not!

There's a Windows version also but nobody cares too much about that! Thanks again

I've added a new devlog if anybody is keen to follow the progress! Cheers

This is really cool stuff - I'm gonna have a play on my powerbook g4 later. I tried installing Unity 2.6.1 a while ago on my powerbook but it seemed the crack didn't work and the servers are completely offline so I was never able to get into it. How did you get it to work? This was the one I was trying to use https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/unity-pro

I never mentioned I used a crack. Not sure why you would assume I did. But if one were follow the instructions one the link you used. It says replace the crack terminal thingy with the one in the unity folder. Should be pretty straightforward

I only assumed that because I was under the impression unity 2.6.1 does not work without a crack. Maybe you misunderstood, I wasn’t saying how did you get the crack to work, I was saying how did you get unity 2.6.1 to work in general. Sorry for the confusion.

I also did try those instructions but it asks you to login even with the crack in the unity folder. You can see in the comments on Macintosh garden people complaining about the same thing.

Assuming now you did not use a crack, how did you sign in? Maybe because you’re running it on intel?

I was joking mate. I did use the crack and it worked straight away for me. I'm using 10.8.5 .
I havnt tried to install unity on my g4 but surely being PPC is not the issue. If you install unity replace that terminal file it should work. I don't remember exactly what I did but I remember it was super easy and it worked straight away. I hope you can get it working. It would be great to see people making retro games again.

I just had a bit of a look on the garden and yes it looks like it's only working on intel unfortunately. There is a legacy page somehere maybe you could try the orginal unity version 1

Haha I’m obviously not the best at reading sarcasm, some people get very touchy about cracking software. Yeah it must be intel only, just tried on my OS X Mavericks machine and it runs perfectly. Gonna have a go at trying some stuff out - never used a Unity version this old though, feels strange. I had a go at running your game on my Powerbook g4 1.67, runs nicely at max settings with some occasional stutters, pretty cool. I'll try and run it on my Powerbook ti 1.0 once I update it to panther and see how it runs!

Awesome thanks. What are the Ti Book specs?
Also still looking for more g3 testers. As I said earlier I want to try get it to run on as low a spec machine as possible.

It’s the last one, 1ghz 64mb video card. I’m at university right now but I have a G3 clamshell 466 with only 8mb of vram at home, so when I get a chance to go back I’ll definitely give it a test and see how it fairs. Also got a G4 cube with a 16mb card that I can test with when I get back.

That's awesome. I'm sure the cube will scrape through but doubtful on the clamshell. Looks like you have got a cool collection of machines there! When did the cube come out 2000? If it manages that will be officially the oldest machine to run it. Be cool if a late 90s machine pulled it off

The Cube’s specs are quite similar to the original “Sawtooth” PMG4 released in 1999, so if the Cube can pull it off the Sawtooth should also be able to.

I totally forgot about the sawtooth. I mostly grew up with all in one macs. Been a long time since I saw PPC power mac. As I said if I have to shed a few more kilos graphically I could probably squeeze a little more out of it but it's would be for pretty minor gains.

Have yet again stripped it down even further and reworked many of the textures. Those stats are in what is probably the most graphical demanding area
