Confirmed - that is still the case with on iPhone 3G.
 
I don't get it. Volume control works on my Aluminum MacBook. It must be just a software update. There's no reason it wouldn't/shouldn't work.
 
Unless the hardware of the iPhone 3G isn't capable of detecting when the volume buttons are pushed.
