Wasn't overly impressed with the launch of the new rMBP, the refurbs look very competitive. Tossing up between:

A$1,809.00

Refurbished 13.3-inch rMBP 2.6GHz (July 2014)
16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
256GB Flash Storage
Intel Iris Graphics

VS

A$1,959.00
13-inch rMBP 2.7GHz (newly released)
8GB 1866MHz LPDDR3 memory
256GB PCIe-based flash storage1
Intel Iris Graphics 6100
Force Touch trackpad

Im looking for the fastest option for for the simultaneous use of chrome (+40 tabs), word, calendar, mail and music. Recommendations welcome.

2014 for the win 16 GB ram is just what you need because remember in MacBooks ram is non-upgradeable

Does the boost in ram speed in the newer models not compensate for this?

Also, wouldn't the CPU speed bump also bring them into par?

I'm curious as to what would be the fastest configuration.

The fastest would be the 16GB of ram, especially if you plan on browsing with up to 40+ tabs. Chrome eats up a LOT of ram.

And for the other things(Word,Calender,Mail and Music), I think both should be able to hold up.:)

On synthetic benchmarks, the newer model will likely score slightly higher. In real world use, you'll never see the difference.
