I have the with Apple Watch Series 0 running os4, and I love it! At, 69, I'm just beginning a running program, but I've been using the exercise app on my watch since I got it for other exercises I do.

Today, I went for my first outdoor run (after using a YouTube running program for indoor running for a few months). Here's my question. Since the program I'm listening to begins the run with a warm-up, and ends with a cool down, do I set the Outdoor Run program when I first begin the warm up? the run? Should it be on for just the actual running, stopping it before the cool down? Today, I ran it when I first went outside and stopped it after my cool down.

I know it's not life or death, I'm just wondering if I did it correctly. Thanks for your input. :)

You could go either way. My NCAA college cross country running kids, who are very speed oriented, don’t start their workout until after the warmup. This way the workout speed isn’t diluted by the slow warmup.

My wife and I, however, like to measure total time and distance. So we start our warmup immediately before the warmup and include any cool down.

I would also only measure the run it self as it would be the most “pure” part of the exercise and that way easier to track my progress

[doublepost=1503880157][/doublepost]Thanks to both of you for your advice. I don't run fast enough yet to worry about my time, but it is nice to keep track of my progress.

I love muy Apple watch and have seldom taken it off! It's fun to find this new way to keep track of my progress. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.
