I bought a brand-new Series 4 (GPS&Cellular) from BestBuy today and I am having major issues trying to get it setup. My iPhone Xs is running OS 13.2.3 so it is up to date.

The watch begins the process and pairs with the phone. Then it goes to the screen that tells me that the watch needs to have the latest Watch OS and then I chose to “update”. It starts thinking and then eventually gives me the error message that the update could not be done because I am not connected to the internet. I have full Wi-Fi and I can go to other sites, receive emails, etc…

I tried skipping the update process and chose to setup the watch as a new watch. It then asks which wrist I prefer and once I make that selection, the whole process just hangs up again. The only way out is to close down the watch app which un-pairs the watch and start again.

Long story short, I can’t get this thing going regardless of my attempts. I have paired, unpaired, reset network settings, powered off the phone and watch several times, and I spent some time chatting with Apple to no avail. Apple customer service says that the servers are up and running, so it’s not on their end.
Any ideas or suggestions?

I'm assuming you have a solid WiFi connection, cell reception, no Airplane mode and bluetooth is enabled when you've tried pairing. You've also exhausted all things Apple suggests--including contacting them for support-- so maybe the next step would be to return/exchange at Best Buy.

Out of curiosity, have you tried pairing it and updating it with a different iPhone? Thinking a coworker, friend or family member. Have you also reset Apple Watch?

Thanks for the suggestions and links! One last desperate attempt and wouldn’t you know it, the update popped up and I am in the process of downloading watch OS 6.1. So my fingers are crossed that I have made it past the hurdle!

I’m not sure what did the trick, but I did restart the phone and reset the watch again...maybe that resolved my issues.

Thanks again and I will update when it’s all done!

I'm having the exact same issue. Could you please outline a few things you tried that might have an effect? It's driving me crazy.

I had the same issue on Saturday. I opened a chat session with Apple Support. They said it was a known issue and they'd get back to me. I tried again this evening and it worked. I never did hear back from Apple Support.
