New software up date & firm ware update for Imac intel & iLive 06

Just being really dumb, but what do these updates actually solve? & the firm ware! Have I missed something? What is this firm ware actually doing with my computer?

Updates improve security and various other features. They prevent you from experiencing problems in the future, and its very rare the can do anything detremental to your system..

Just install them and don't worry.
