New textbooks crashes to grey screen

I wanted to see how the new textbooks worked, so I downloaded the free one. When I try running it, I hear the announcer's voice but I get a grey screen. There is nothing but grey on the screen and leaving ibooks and going back in takes me right back to the grey screen. Any suggestions?

I've been authoring a picture-heavy book using iBooks Author and have seen this a few times on my iPad (original model).

I have to force quit and relaunch iBooks but then it works. No idea why/when this is going to happen. Seems to be random.
