So, just turned in my appletv 4k and when I double click the “home” button on the remote I get a screen where I can scroll through what appears to be all open apps (similar to the half up swipe on the iPhone).

Is this something new or have I never noticed it before?

That has been there since day one of tvOS. It is extremely helpful for navigating open apps, and closing problematic ones.

If you used an IR remote in the past, you may have never noticed this because the IR remote learning feature did not have an option (for some idiotic reason) for the "Home" or "TV" button for the IR remotes until recently.

If you have only used the Siri Remote, I am surprised you have never seen this before, even by accident.

Thanks. Not sure how I missed that. I had always used a Logitech remote to control TV and AppleTV but, even on the newer Siri remote I never really use that button. I always use the back button to back out to the Home Screen.

As others have said this is a feature that has been available from just about the intro of tvOS. I use it as an app switcher.

I have never seen this before either and I've had an Apple TV since the second gen one.

I find this to be a very useful feature. On a number of occasions I have found that if I seem to be having buffering or other problems I will use this to close any open apps (and the number that are open always surprises me) and more often than not the problem goes away.

I had to use that every 3 or 4 days for MONTHS to force-kill the Paramount+ app 🙄 it would keep getting stuck and wouldn’t show Live TV. Finally they seem to have fixed that.
