The Iraq conflict is not centered around oil.... If all we wanted from Iraq was oil, all the current administration would have to do would be to lift our sanctions with Iraq. No "beating up" required. No sanctions would mean millions of gallons of sweet, noxious crude oil flowing into the international oil market....
As a side note, I think it was GM/Chrysler that actually had a working hydrogen-fuled vehicle prototype (even though it was a mini-van) that they were making some great progress on... It was in a Car and Driver a few months ago.
Maybe we'll see some usable hydrogen-based vehicles within the next 5 - 8 years or so.
Actually,
1) Iraq has the second largest known reserves in the world
2) Links to terrorists are weak at best. In fact, as a secular state, Iraq probably has little in common with Islamic terrorists. Recall that Iraq was in a war, fully supported by the US I might add, with then fundamentalist Iran.
3) Militarily, Iraq is very weak. It has been easily controlled by the west. Should inspectors be allowed back in (many reports of american spies in the original group of inspectors) the probability of WMD creation is fairly low.
4) Most of the WMD existing after the war were destroyed by the UN inspectors. There is no evidence of Nuclear capability, and launch capability is limited to, maybe, 20 SCUD missles. Pakistan is surely a more fundamentalist state, and have a significant capability.
5) The "assassination" attempt on George H Bush in Kuwait, may have been a put up job by Kuwaitis. There has never been good evidence otherwise.
6) Saddam Hussein is a brutal dictator of the most secular and best educated (including women) Arab state in the world. His only desire is to remain in power. But, by not abdicating, he controls the oil.
7) The US wants control of Iraqi oil production to prevent an oil shock like the one that occurred in the 70's. The big concern is that Saudi Arabia will go fundamentalist fairly soon, and will use control of oil as a weapon. Recall, that 15 of the terrorists involved in 9/11 were Saudi's.
8) We get 800,000 barrels a day from Iraq as is.
Whatever you think of the evidence, it all comes down to oil.
I recommend buzzflash.com and bushreport.com which reference many newsreports worldwide. If you are conservative, you might not like these, but they tend to be better journalistically than the network news and CNN.
