New to iPhone Pre-Orders, how do they work?

So in a month from now I’d love to get a iPhone X. I will be pre ordering it online but I’m very confused as to how I can snatch one quickly. I use AT&T and I would like to do an installment.

Wouldn’t I have to login to AT&Ts site and waste time filling out agreements? Or is it reserved when I add it to cart

How much is the first charge? Apple's site says it'll be $50 a month(With AT&T) so will I start with that or pay more since its the first payment. I'm sorry for how uneducated I am on this LOL

first charge is the tax and the down payment if any... soon as you see the charge you know your item is processed even if the tracking info has yet to be updated.
