New to Mac and iMovie....

And i just need a few pointers please. I have bought a new iMac 2.6ghz and a Sony SR11 handycam to capture video in HD. I am just a bit lost as to wht my workflow should be? I import it into iMovie 08 and edit but then whats best to output to so i can keep my HD footage? I know i can go to iDVD but that downscales it. Also, how do i back my footage up so i keep the raw files? Thanks
