New to Mac with a 15" MBP… Now what?

After years and years of using hand-me-down laptops for all things binary, I have decided to invest in something I can be proud of and call my own. I am currently studying video production tech at my local community college and plan to continue into film school. This in mind, I chose to buy the more high end of the two 15" MBP's. I intend to buy two 4GB memory cards to replace my two 2GB factory installed RAM. If anyone has any recommendations on manufacturers, retailers, installation, or anything else, I would be glad to hear them. Also what might be some good applications, settings, or standard practices to employ in order to safeguard my new machine? I'm not new to online forums so I will be searching the site for these very answers, but any direct advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
