New to Macbook

Just converted over to a macbook pro and have a few questions.
Firstly are there any pointers/tips or software that i should know about or that every mac should have?

I have read I don't need an antivirus on my mac and it seems ClamX is the go to suggestion if you want one.

How about internet security?

Also I have no idea about mountain lion etc I have read it depends on the version you are running. My macbook pro is OS X version 10.9.4 do this mean I should have it?

10.9.4 is OS X Mavericks, which is the most up-to-date version of OS X, so you're good to go on that front.
