[NEW TO MAC's] looking to buy a iMac 20"

Hello,
I'm currently looking into buying a 20" Apple iMac for $1699 with applecare+$169 which also includes a $150 mailin rebate from amazon.com. I'm looking to make a switch from windows as I have never used a mac before so this is somewhat of a big switch. I just want to know if I should purchase this iMac now or if I should wait until the macworld expo is over and possible see if apple plans on launching a newer improved or even upgraded iMac or if I should just go ahead and make the purchase now. Thanks!
 
You might as well wait nine days unless the rebate ends, otherwise mad jew is probably right, i doubt that the macworld will bring in anything new imac wise. Better safe than sorry though.
 
Excuse my curiosity, but if you've never used a mac before then why are you dropping $1700 on one? Maybe I'm just mis-interpreting what you're saying but by the way it's worded, it sounds as if you've never used one, full stop. If this is the case, then I can only admonish you to try it out before you spend that much dough on one. While I and many others prefer macs to PCs, unless you've used one, you can't really say the same thing for yourself. :)

As to your question, you may as well wait on seeing what comes out at MacWorld just so you have more options. Unless you know that you're dead set on getting an iMac then waiting a few days to see what upgrades are announced would probably be a wise move unless your rebate runs out between now and MacWorld.

That's Satan Talk™. How about giving the poor switcher the benefit of the doubt and assume they've researched this topic. :)

The only thing a switcher has to worry about is specific compatibility. Make sure all the apps you need/want have an equivalent on OSX. It's rare for a switcher to become disgruntled because of the way OSX works but it's far more common (relatively speaking) for a switcher to have to return to Windows because their small-time app doesn't run on OSX.

truz, what sort of apps do you run? Compatibility-wise, you really should be fine.

ROTFLMAO, you believe that $1700 USD is a lot of money, I invested $4500 CAD when I bought my first Mac. Why do you care what (s)he does with they money, they have done some basic research and all they need is a trip to the Apple Store to get a quick 15 minute crash course. ;)

Chances are if you are looking forward to buying an iMac G5, there will not be an update so soon as it was just revamped. If you are waiting on a Mac Mini or a portable then I would hold off till MWSF. :)

photoshop, imageready, dreamweaver... I don't plan on using this for gaming or anything. I would be using this mac for web designs. if you don't mind me asking, does mac have a decent ftp client?
 
Yes, I have been looking into purchasing a mac since that sexy spinning imac came out ;) which was back when techtv did not sell out and had the screen savers still goin'

I'm sorry, but also being into photography, I've learned that more people than not tend to buy products without much research. I think my question was fairly legitimite and wasn't addressed in any hostile manner and thought I would ask. Better that than just assuming that because you, me, and several people love macs that the OP will as well without giving it a hands on try.

$1,700 *is* a lot of money regardless of whether you're willing to spend $4500CAD or upwards. It's like saying that buying a $30,000 car is considered cheap just because you're willing to spend $100,000 on your own.

And I care because the original post did not say that they had researched the OS and I believed, and still do, that it'd be good if they tried it out so that they don't make a purchase that they may *gasp* actually regret. I never said they weren't allowed to spend whatever amounts of money they wanted to on whatever computer they wanted to get, but I think it's at least nice to suggest that they give it a test run before investing so much into one. If i was spending that much on anything then I'd certainly hope that someone would suggest that I either try it out or research (which the poster has now said that they've done) the product before I purchase it.

In subsequent posts, he/she has now stated why he/she wants a mac and I think it's a good reason and that they have thought it out. From the first post, however, I had no indication that this was the case and had no clue that they were a web designer and thought I'd put my $0.02 in.

have you contemplated the cost of this software for Mac as well? or does it mean that... ;)
 
Wish I would have waited LMAO. I ordered a iMac from amazon.com on the 7th and its coming to my house tomorrow. (wednesday) I called amazon and they said to put a note on the door to return to sender and they will credit my account back without any restock fees or anything. I just placed an order about 2 hours ago for the new Intel iMac. Should have it friday or saturday! :)

where did you order the intel imac?
 
I ordered directly from apple.com. I got the iMac 20" 2GH INTEL Core Duo with the ATI video upgrade from 128 to 256mb and memory upgrade from 512mb to 2GB with the new .mac for $2074 out the door after student discounts.
 
I will have the iMac in my hands at the latest Monday. (mac sales rep told me)
