The default items in iCal are "Home" and "Work". How do I add things like "School", or "Vacation" so they have their own color? I did add a subscription calendar. Also, how do you add background pictures to a specific day (like a fireworks on the 4th of July) ???

You should just be able to click the "+" on the lower left to add a new calendar, such as "school", etc. Alternatively, you can go File->New Calendar. From here you can set colors and other options.

Yup, look for the + or right-click the date of interest and Create Event.

I have never tried to add an image like fireworks for the 4th. Unsure about that.

Thanks for the info. Any idea about background pictures on specific days?
