Hi,

do not try to rename the home folder.

Go to System Preferences / Users and groups, unlock, click the "+" sign to create a new account.

Select "Administrator" in the drop-down menu at the top.

Create short name, name, password, "Create account".
(this will be your admin account).

Then, log out from this account, login in the new account, go to System Preferences / Users and group, unlock, select the (old) account you want to delete, click the "-" sign.

Go to "SystemPreferences/Sharing" and change the Computer Name to what you want. Also, click "Edit" and change the local HostName to the same thing with ".local" at the end.

Sorry if I misled you but being new to Mac and to computing in general and an old man I hope you will forgive me as it is Xmas ,I will try the other suggestion later thanks and merry Christmas.

And you did create a new account in your name as suggested above ... then logged out and re-logged in as your new account?

You can change the name of the computer in Sharing, at the top of the window, but you need to hit Enter after that.

Do you know how to take and post screenshots ?

No problem, we are glad to help.

However, it would be nice if someone offered to help you directly via Skype for example (screen sharing).

I personally can't do this because I don't speak English, otherwise I would offer my help.

colins-iMac:~ colin$
This is what it is saying in terminal.

This tell us that :

1. colins-iMac is the name of the computer in System Preferences/Sharing.

2. "colin" is the name of the home folder of the account you are currently using.

Hence my first suggestion... (post #2)

Could any english speaking people offer to help Mrmullad directly please ?

Since you know how to access the Terminal, could you please type this in :

Code:
ls /users

Then hit the Enter key, and post out the answer. Thanks.
(there is a space between ls and /)

Bravo for the screenshots.

Your account has been renamed into "Derek" but the home folder (located in Macintosh HD/Users) of this account is named "colin".

The home folder could be renamed into "derek" but DO NOT try to rename the home folder unless you exactly know how to do this.

The best solution by far would be creating a new "admin" account, then renaming the colin folder from there.

But again don't do this without being helped.

I can offer to help through Skype if you use Skype, however I have poor English.

Thanks for all your help and your offer but i have a mate that is into mac i think i will get him to help me when he comes back from his holiday.
Once again for your help at least now i know how to take a screen shot and upload to the web.

Just a quick update on my problem although I have ordered a snow leopard from apple I thought I would try from a bootable Yosemite so I did a google search on how to make one on a flash drive booted from said flash drive and erased SSD and installed a clean install of Yosemite but in terminal it is still saying Colin's iMac Derek$ .So I must be missing something I can't understand how installing snow leopard will make any difference could somebody please explain why it will make any difference .
