If I get a touch would it be worth it if I get a new one or get a refurb and download the update. Ive been reading and the only feature that interest me the most hardware wise is the external speaker and the volume buttons. What features from the new one are the same and what new features come down to the old 1st gen touch?

If the volume controls is the selling point for you, then get the new touch. Also the refurbs are probably cheaper.

I am perfectly happy with my 1 gen iPod touch. Awesome device.

Again, it is all about what you are willing to spend.

yeah, main advantages of the 2G are the external volume buttons, as mentioned, and the use of the forthcoming remote/mic (+ any other unannounced accessories that use the fourth ring on the plug), the built in Nike+iPod, and the built in speaker.
if you buy refurb you will also need to add $10 for the 2.1 software update if you want genius, app store, etc.

Depends which touch you're looking at. For the 32g for instance, the difference is only around 80 bucks, less if you're a student, in the military or can get a corporate discount.

For that amount, I would think its worth it for the volume buttons, improved battery life and resale value (if thats relevant to you)
