Got my brand new universal dock last night. The one that comes with the remote and the adapter for the iPod touch & Classic.

I was somewhat surprised to discover that the cable I had intended on using would not work.

I wanted to use the Firewire / USB combo cable that has worked since 3G. Even though iPod no longer syncs via Firewire it has always charged with a Firewire cable & the Firewire power adapter.

Not any more.

So I switched over to my travel-charger, a decent 3rd party jobbie that has served me well with my 5G. It's a 30-pin iPod cable with a USB connector and a power brick that can plug into a wall for power... similar to the Apple cables & power bricks you can buy today.

No luck. It completely ignored the fact that it was plugged into the wall and ran off battery instead.

So I plugged the USB cable (still 3rd party) into my Powerbook and it worked. So the 3rd party cable can send power, but apparently the dock "looks for" an Apple power brick (USB only no more Firewire) or a computer and only accepts power from it.

Guess that's the official end to my Firewire charging scheme then. Anybody wanna buy 2 firewire cables & a Firewire power brick?
