I installed the latest Apple automatic update. It included an updated for Safari, some security fixes, and time machine if I remember correctly. I have an external monitor hooked up to my Macbook Pro. Upon restarting my monitor's resolution appears squished. I went to my display preferences, and the resolution 1280x1024 is no longer listed. The closest ones now are 1280x800 and 1440 x 900... How do I get my old resolution back?

You might try disconnecting and reconnecting the monitor, or flipping between mirrored/extended mode and see if that helps reset its brains.
