The USB-C Apple Pencil that Apple unveiled in October is available for purchase starting today. Priced at $79, the Apple Pencil is compatible with all iPads that feature a USB-C port, and it serves as an alternative to the more expensive first and second-generation Apple Pencil models.

The Apple Pencil features a matte finish and a flat magnetic side to allow it to attach to an iPad when not in use, plus there is a hidden USB-C port under the sliding cap for charging purposes. Unlike the Apple Pencil 2, it is not able to charge magnetically when attached to an iPad, and it is also lacking pressure sensitivity and support for tap gestures.

Other Apple Pencil features such as low latency and tilt sensitivity are included, plus it supports the Apple Pencil Hover feature on compatible M2 iPad Pro models.

The Apple Pencil can be purchased from the online Apple Store in more than 30 countries, including the United States. Orders placed today will deliver as soon as November 3.

Just wait for the Pencil 2 to go on sale for ~$99, which it does at various times during the year.
Or better yet, wait until Black Friday or near Xmas to see if prices will drop more.
This. 👆

I have bought multiple Apple Pencil 2's for my workplace and personally. Select times from Nov - Jan and it is 89.99 without fail. These sales are for a NEW AP2 and last usually a few days with decent amount of stock on Amazon, Best Buy, OWC, and NewEgg.

This isn’t a replacement for the 2 it’s really an option for people without iPads that can charge wirelessly
I know, but the comment I was replying to specifically mentioned wireless charging, so his hypothetical Pencil 3 wouldn’t be a replacement for the 1, and I don’t see a difference to the 2.

i'll wait for Pencil 3 Pro with wireless charging, pressure sens, and double tap. thanks
I think Pencil 3 should be revised with:
  • Can charge via induction or USB-C
  • Black (or at least Space Black)
  • Longer battery life
  • Find My with ultra wideband
  • Haptic feedback on gestures
Rumored new features include:
  • Interchangeable magnetic tips
  • Color sensor that samples color from the environment

Do I need to go to Apple college again to figure out how this is different than the other pencils. What a mess they have made of their product line. Nothing makes sense anymore. Why is this happening again? It's like 1995 all over again.

It’s really not that deep the pencil you should buy is determined by the iPad you own. Anyone with an iPad that can charge magnetically should get the 2nd gen pencil. This new one will work in any model. They will stop selling the first gen pencil when they stop selling the $329 iPad. Being that the model that moves the most unit is that cheap entry level one it’s understandable why there are multiple options. In 1995 they had a bunch of products that no one was buying in large enough numbers. Now Apple costumers span varies types of consumer at a vast wide range of economics.
