Is it just a matter of formatting it with DU and using it or do I need to use any Lacie installed software / management tools to set it up? I'm thinking about future firmware updates and the like.
I know TM is different now and I've not done this for a while (my last backup disc was/is USB 2.0 :) )
It's for backing up a M1 MBA, if that matters.
Thank you.

I would just use DU to format it, I use MacOS Journaled. :)
For some extra safety, you can Encrypt it in the TM settings. Just don't forget your password! :D

That's what I plan on doing unless I'm told different by you good people on here
I think the "new" TM changes the format to APFS (sensitive) or something, whatever you start off with.

Thanks.

It's working with APFS too, but I'm kinda old school, and I still use MacOS Journaled.
Both of them gonna work perfectly anyway :)

I would remove all the pre-installed LaCie software, and then reformat using disk utility.
As kira suggests above, I'd also recommend that you choose HFS+ instead of APFS.
You want "Mac OS extended with journaling enabled, GUID partition format".

TM will change whatever I use to APFS it seems.

Ah, ok. Not a tm user here.
Looks like they don't give you the choice any more.
