Should i be shutting down every night or after every use. I used to just close the top.

I never shut my laptop down. I either leave it up or put it into sleep mode (shutting the lid puts into sleep)

If you search the forum for "sleep or shut down", you'll find dozens of threads where this is discussed. The bottom line is it doesn't matter. A great number of users simply shut the lid and let it sleep, not shutting down for months at a time. This also helps with the maintenance scripts that run in the background.

This may be useful:

I always shut it down. I don't know why or have a good reason. I don't have anything on my desktop either and close every app that I have open nightly. I even only have 4 items in my dock.

I shut it down during night only. If I'm going out I'll just close it.

OS X has maintenance scripts that are scheduled to run daily, weekly and monthly. If your Mac is asleep at the time those scripts are scheduled to run (in the wee hours of the morning), they will automatically run the next time your Mac is awake. If, however, your Mac is shut down at the scheduled time, the scripts will not automatically run when you turn it on. If it's always shut down at the scheduled time, that maintenance is never performed.

Im all about control. I refuse to let my mac do things without my permission.:)

So I guess what your trying to say is to keep it asleep.
