New Mac OS X Server at WWDC

MacCentral reports that Apple will be introducing developers to a new version of Mac OS X Server based on Panther.

The next version of Mac OS X codenamed "Panther," is expected to be one of the big stories of the conference -- Apple postponed WWDC by a month so they could deliver a better build of Panther to developers attending the conference. Until now it was unknown if Apple would show the Server version of the operating system at WWDC.

The next version of Mac OS X (Panther) has been known to be the major topic at WWDC, with developers to receive an early copy of the new OS.

Eh, I guess it's cool, but it doesn't really matter to me. At least this doesn't wreck my hopes of the PPC 970 appearing at WWDC. :)

Yes, it's going to be a great year.
But no, it's not the year of the server and the workstation.

It's going to be the year of the Prosumer Laptops and Desktops (sounds good to me!).
 
Looks like I'll be searching the net for the ever rare working ISOs of OS X Server. Hopefully they'll put some thought into workstation deployment. Word to Apple. Go checkout ImageCast. I want an Appleaffied version of that. K?
 
I'm not too crazy about this. I have server running right now, for no reason really. I like the regular version better. Once Panther comes out, I'm switching back. Too much crap I don't need here.

Have you looked at NetInstall which is included with OSXS?

If you just want to restore images, boot from a custom NetInstall image, then script AppleSoftwareRestore from the command line.

easy.

or use NetInstall to install custom .pkgs.


Or use NetBoot to boot the machines from a cached network image.

You're running it for 'no reason'.

It's full of 'crap you don't need'.

yeah I can see why you wouldn't be that excited and why you'd 'like the regular version better'.

Obviously you have no need for a server, so why are you running it in the first place?
 
i guess it makes sense to release a new version of OS X Server with Panther. it will be good if they can preview the new Server version at WWDC.

I threw it on to see what it was about. Then I got lazy, and didn't bother to take it off. I will when panther comes out though.
 
i'll be glad to see what they add to it... see if we get some bragging rights to add to our list...

well i think this was rather obvious, especially with all the talk about 970 processors and new hardware!?
 
I hope the new release lowers the system requirements. I'd sure love to move my web server from my G4 to a cheap eBay machine. I'd also like to see more tools built in, including an easy to use front-end to PHP.

does this mean that PPC 970 XServes? I'd bet it does if the PowerMac were to get an update. why not? it needs it just as much, if not MORE than the PowerMacs.

oh, and the stevenote starts at 10 AM pacific time on June 23rd, 2003 (monday)
 
Just think about it. Say if they are letting us know that the next line of Mac OSX Servers will be announced for sure and then leaving it at that. The servers and Panther. Just a little fuel for the fire over the weekend. What does that mean then when Monday comes around? How about room for... "Oh, and one more thing" :D

Well, yeah it's obvious that there would be a Server version of Panther, but typically the server versions of X have lagged, if only slightly, behind the desktop versions. So it's not a foregone conclusion that Apple would be talking about Panther Server just because it was talking about Panther. If this is true it's good news.
 
maybe because it's a Beta and half the stuff isn't working and half the interface isn't done.

or because it may cause complete data loss or (likely at some point) file corruption.
 
I have used OS X Server verisons 1.2, 10.0, 10.1 and 10.2

The improvements per build were enormous (especially speed, SMB and remote administration).

If they continue to improve like this, running on a Dual PPC 970 XServe...... WOW.

The only problem is compatibility between the versions. Remote admin of a 10.1 server running on Jaguar had shortcummings.

what if they have one more thing... twice!

oooOOOooo, that'd be nice. :) but they wont with new pro desktops. too much introduction and junk to go through... lots of demos. remember the G4 announcement in 99? most of the show was bakeoffs with Pentium 3 computers.
