I have used Apple’s migration tool in the past (iPad/iPhone) and it has gone well. When I had to replace my wife’s iPhone last month and we went thru the process the existing watch was never found and we had to go thru a reset process with it and set it up with the new iPhone. Tried multiple times and it just couldn‘t find the watch. Now with a new watch and iPhone coming in tomorrow I’m debating the best way/order to upgrade.

Do the iPhone first and hope the watch moves over to the new phone, and then do the watch.
Unpair the watch on the old iPhone, migrate to new iPhone, then restore backup from the watch backup to the new watch.

Don’t think I’ve ever upgraded both at the same time, so curious on other peoples experiences/plans.

Thanks!
Michael

I would probably do the watch first. My thinking is that since the watch backup you'd be restoring from is on the iPhone itself that would reduce the risk of something going wrong (your watch backup not getting transferred properly to the new phone if you did the phone first, for example).

We are also upgrading both, so my plan is the same as last year. Setup the new phone completely and then pair the new watch with the new phone and it should be fine.

But if you setup the watch as new don’t you lose any activity for the day? My wife would kill me if I lost her streaks and activity for the day!

Whichever way you do it there is a risk of a small activity gap. If your old watch is still connected to the old phone the activity will
Still be recorded and should sync to the new phone once it’s setup. So when you pair the watch it will sync up (or should). Best do it in the morning and you have the rest of the day to close rings if there is a small gap. Providing all the activity is synced to the new phone before you pair the new watch you should be fine.
