I've just bought a new WD My Passport Studio 2TB external hard drive directly from the WD online store. I notice that it makes quiet but frequent 'chirping' noises when reading/writing data and am just wondering if this is normal or a sign of a faulty/failing drive, because my other WD My Passport Studio 2TB drive (purchased new last year from Amazon) does not make these noises?

Are you feeding it live worms or just plain old domestic bird seed? :D

Sorry had to say it lol.

Seriously though, it shouldn't make any audible noises like that. You might hear it spin up and spin down but it should be fairly quiet otherwise.

It's new. I would take it back.

I had a feeling that was coming! :p

I was hoping not to have to as it does appear to be working ok and I've already loaded all of my personal data onto it so would presumably need to do a multi-pass security wipe before returning it. But on the other hand I'll always have a niggling doubt about the drive's reliability if I keep it. I think I'll email WD for clarification.

I have no idea what the sound is but I can only assume a chirping sound is something rubbing like the head when it moves. So one can only assume this wear will effect it very soon even if it is working now.

Thanks for the push in the right direction. I contacted WD and they agree that I should return the drive for a refund, which is what I will do. Hopefully the new drive will be ok!
