Well now that the holy grail of news which is The New York Times reported it, it's definitely newsworthy. I expect Fox News and all the sheep like networks to follow suit with 24/7 coverage and a 1 hour special hosted by Geraldo.

No no no no no ... this is all about currency exchange rates and Apple trying to maintain international price points for the iPhone. The dollar is so weak at the moment that it would be theoretically possible to buy hundreds of phones in the U.S. and export them for profit, undercutting Apple's overseas prices. Apple had to move aggressively to stop the gray market exports or else lose all control over international iPhone pricing (and margins.)
